My Sheep Were Grazing
Words: Minna Louise Holman
Music: How Great Our Joy | Traditional German
1. My sheep were grazing on a plain
When angels sang this glad refrain:
2. They sang: “A child was born this night,
In Bethlehem, ’neath starry light.”
3. God sent His Son to earth that we
Might be redeem’d eternally.
4. For His great gift our thanks we bring
And joyfully our praises sing:
Refrain:
“Alleluia, leluia.
Joy, joy, joy,
Joy, joy, joy.
Glory to God, in His high Heav’n,
Glory to God, in His high Heav’n.”
Compare to “While By My Sheep”:
1. While by the sheep we watched at night, (or, While by my sheep I watched at night)
Glad tidings brought an angel bright.
2. There shall be born, so He did say,
In Bethlehem a Child today.
3. There shall the Child lie in a stall,
This Child who shall redeem us all.
4. This gift of God we’ll cherish well,
That ever joy our hearts shall fill.
Refrain:
How great our joy! Great our joy!
Joy, joy, joy! Joy, joy, joy!
Praise we the Lord in heaven on high!
Praise we the Lord in heaven on high!
